RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, identified by intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of approach shafts providing entry to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows British leadership, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," he added. "Including them were a great many British troops on duty over the festive period. This action, to remove militants who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "major assault" on IS targets in the country, after an attack killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
